Poll: 83 Percent of Workers Say They Work While Sick, Up from 77 Percent Previously

CHICAGO – Dec. 17, 2007 – A total of 83 percent of workers reported showing up for work sick, according to a Tell It NowSM poll by ComPsych Corporation, the world’s largest provider of employee assistance programs and worldwide leader in GuidanceResources (EAPs, behavioral health, wellness, work-life and crisis intervention services). In 2005, the same poll showed a total of 77 percent of workers going to work while sick.

When asked whether they worked while sick, employees responded:
2007 2005
17% 23% No, I put my health first
37% 34% Yes, because my workload makes it too difficult to take off
25% 26% Yes, because it feels "risky" to take off in the current work environment
21% 17% Yes, because I save my sick days for when my kids need me
83% 77% Total who work while sick

“Employees are pushing the limits of their health and showing up to work at all costs,” said Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, chairman and CEO of ComPsych. “This trend is driven in part by an uncertain economy and the significant debt loads taken on by workers in the last two years. More than ever, employees feel the need to be present and show effort on the job.”

The Tell It Now survey was conducted from Nov. 12 to Dec. 11, 2007, receiving responses from the employees of 1,000 ComPsych client companies nationwide.
