Mental health concerns show up at work every day, yet many employees are unsure how to respond when a colleague is struggling. Stigma can keep people silent, and even well-intentioned individuals may hesitate out of fear of saying the wrong thing.

The ComPsych Certified Mental Health Supporter Program (CMHSP) was built to address this reality by establishing the skills employees need to recognize distress early, respond with confidence, and guide colleagues toward appropriate resources and support. Participants strengthen real-world communication skills, learn how to navigate difficult situations, and reinforce boundaries that protect their own well-being while helping others. With a focus on both self-care and the care of others, the CMHSP prepares employees to intervene compassionately and confidently when concerns arise. At its core, the CMHSP is designed to create a culture where support is not rare or role-based— moving from an organization with mental health supporters to an organization of mental health supporters.

Who Are Mental Health Supporters?

Mental Health Supporters are individuals across the organization who serve as a point of connection when someone may be struggling, helping to embed mental health support into day-to-day interactions, rather than relying solely on formal resources. They are not counselors or therapists, but compassionate colleagues equipped with the knowledge and tools to recognize signs of distress, provide empathetic support, and guide others toward professional resources. Their presence helps normalize conversations around mental health and reduces the barrier to seeking help.

How Does Peer Support Reduce Stigma at Work?

As the Certified Mental Health Supporter Program has grown, so has the global network of graduates. What has become increasingly clear is that the commitment to mental health advocacy in the workplace transcends borders, industries, and job titles.

While certification equips individuals with the skills to support others, it does not eliminate the complexity of doing so in real-world environments. Championing mental health in the workplace is meaningful work that requires individuals to make decisions in real time, balance empathy with boundaries, and commit to creating psychological safety within their teams. At ComPsych we recognize that without continued support and reinforcement, that responsibility can feel isolating.

How Does Community Extend the Impact of Mental Health Support?

The CMHSP Community was designed to address this reality directly by acknowledging that while training builds capability, community sustains it. This collective space extends the impact of the program by creating a structured environment where graduates can continue to learn and grow beyond certification. Through live sessions, email communications, and supporter spotlights the CMHSP Community reinforces key concepts, provides opportunities to reflect on real-world experiences, and creates space for practical discussion with others who are navigating similar situations. Most importantly, it reinforces a core message that supporting mental health in the workplace is not an individual effort, it is a collective one.

In our first CMHSP Community session, program graduates joined from five countries, representing a diverse range of organizations and perspectives. There was a shared sense of purpose paired with thoughtful reflection on both the opportunities and the challenges of championing mental health in the workplace. Participants reflected on their impact as a Mental Health Supporter describing their experiences as “empowering”, “rewarding” and “a lifeboat for others”. We are proud to partner with organizations around the world to bring the Certified Mental Health Supporter Program to life in ways that are meaningful within their unique cultures and environments.
